A 4 Steps Guide To Planning The Year Without Getting Overwhelmed

Lucy Paulise career coaching A 4 Steps Guide To Planning The Year Without Getting Overwhelmed

As we stand on the precipice of a new year, it’s only natural to contemplate the journey ahead. Planning for the future is essential, but it’s equally important to avoid being overwhelmed by the unknowns that lie ahead. Like walking down a forest, a successful career path requires a strategic approach, focusing on the immediate surroundings before reaching for the distant horizon.

1) Set Your North Star

Just as a compass points to the North, your career needs a guiding light. Define your long-term goals and aspirations, but remember, it’s okay if the path isn’t crystal clear. Your North Star should serve as a general direction rather than a rigid destination, allowing flexibility as you adapt to unforeseen challenges and opportunities.

 2) Assess Your Skills and Resources

Imagine that you are lost in the woods, but you have a map and compass to help you find your way out. In the same way, you can assess your skills, experiences, and knowledge to navigate your career journey. Take stock of what you already know and what you are confident about. If you are struggling to make a decision about certain aspects of your career, it may be because you don’t have all the information you need yet. Plan how to acquire the necessary information and skills, and as you move forward, you will see what else you need to work on. Self-awareness is your compass, helping you make informed decisions about your career.

 3) Start Small

Plan the agile way instead of trying to map out the entire year in one go. Focus on planning the next 2 or 3 steps. Break down your goals into smaller, manageable tasks you can confidently tackle. This approach helps prevent overwhelm and allows for more agile navigation, akin to navigating the twists and turns of a wooded trail. Are there any rivers ahead? Are there valleys? Once you get your first steps down, you will more clearly determine what else is needed to continue toward your north star.

 4) Stay Curious

Walking through the woods, you don’t need to see the entire path; you simply follow the trail as it unfolds. Similarly, embrace the journey of your career. Stay open to unexpected opportunities and be prepared to adjust your course as you gain new insights and experiences. Avoid getting attached to your own ideals or other people’s expectations. Embrace and appreciate where you are getting at, and keep walking.  This fluid approach allows for a more dynamic and fulfilling career progression without the overwhelming feeling of attaching to a specific result. Think about your previous experiences and how often you did not get exactly what you wanted, but you got a better fit for you.

Just as a hiker observes the changing landscapes in a forest, stay attuned to the shifts in your industry and workplace. Regularly evaluate your goals and adapt your plan based on new information. This mindfulness ensures that you remain agile and responsive to the evolving demands of your professional environment. Be curious and open to the unknown and to learn.

Planning your career journey is like walking through a dense forest – it requires a balance of foresight and adaptability. You can confidently navigate the upcoming year by setting a North Star, assessing your resources, planning in small, manageable steps, and staying curious. Don’t worry about the enormity of the path ahead, and don’t expect too much. Enjoy the adventure one step at a time.
