Sorting is the first step to implementing the 5S methodology, and developing focus and ownership is the first micro-change to start sorting efficiently. An essential part of 5S is to help team members focus and build ownership. The organization needs everybody to be involved in what’s going on, engaged, and ready to report improvements everywhere, anytime.

Sort is the first step in any 5S process. The term sort derives originally from the Japanese word “Seiri” which means decide what you need. When you sort, the goal is to remove unnecessary items from the room, station, or space you live or work.
